Whole poppy seeds are widely used in and on top of many baked goods and pastries as a spice and decoration. They are used in and on a variety of foods in North America, including poppyseed muffins, rusk, bagels (such as the Montreal-style bagel), bialys, and cakes such as sponge cake. Poppy seeds can also be used in the same way that sesame seeds are, such as in hamburger buns or to make a candy bar. The bars are made from boiled seeds that have been mixed with sugar or honey.
